Constant scratching, biting and a restless dog can point to a flea problem long before you ever see a flea. Because adult fleas are fast and hide deep in the coat, knowing how to check properly is the first step to keeping your pet comfortable.
The Tell-Tale Signs
Fleas leave clues even when the insects themselves are hard to spot. Watch for these:
- Persistent scratching, licking or biting — especially around the tail base and belly
- Small red bumps or inflamed, irritated skin
- Tiny black specks (“flea dirt”) in the coat that turn red on a damp paper towel
- Thinning hair or hot spots from over-grooming
How to Check at Home
Run a fine-toothed flea comb through your dog’s coat over a sheet of white paper. Comb against the direction of hair growth and pay attention to the neck, tail base and inner thighs. Any dark grit that reddens when wet is a sure sign of fleas.
